The sustainable event trend is on the rise and it’s definitely not going anywhere soon. Events may be all fun and games to plan (for us event organising geeks) and they are certainly enjoyable to attend, but when planned improperly, will eventually lead to disastrous impacts on the environment. Most event planners and professionals these days are constantly searching for ways to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment. Here are some tips on how to plan a sustainable event.

Consider booking a venue that’s all about keeping the environment green. Nowadays, environment-friendly venues are popular with some relying on solar energy as well as wind energy to produce electricity. The Venue Alexandria is one great example of this with its installation of solar panels and wind turbines to generate electricity as well as recycling collected rainwater to be used for cleaning and flushing of toilets.

The Doltone House is also another venue that recognises the importance of environmental sustainability. The venue promotes power and water consumption practices and has a huge view on waste management such as ensuring recycling is done at any of the events and that leftovers will be given away to charity.

It’s common to hand out pretty and well-designed invitation cards in cute envelopes or even perfectly-made brochures and flyers at all types of events. But doing so all the time can leave a huge impact on the environment. Go paperless for your next event by sending out e-invitations or save time by creating an event on Facebook and inviting everyone through it. It’s fast, free and eco-friendly!
However if you must print, consider getting your designs printed and made from recycled materials. Ensure that your invitation cards, booklets or brochures are all double-sided to avoid wasting paper.

What’s the one thing that all events must always have? Food! Caterers these days have adopted ethical food and beverage methods such as obtaining local produce, reducing the use of meat and using more vegetables and legumes in menus, not using chemicals and even exploring the use of organic and carbon neutral drinks. You can also opt for vegetarian food for your next event as they help reduce carbon emissions.

Every year, we see a massive clump of disposable party items and tableware that go to waste, leading to a huge impact on the environment. Opt for eco-friendly tableware or party items such as biodegradable plates and cups as well as napkins made from recycled materials. Besides, skip plastic straws for biodegradable paper straws or simply just avoid straws at all cost!
